Government Projects

GOVERNMENT PROJECTS

Sunshine West College

Location: Victoria

Duration: 4 Months

Asbestos removal of existing buildings to make site ready for the construction of 8 new school buildings in Sunshine College's North & West campuses, comprising of a library, performing arts centre, gymnasium, Years 7-8 learning building, and carparks, as well as undertaking further demolition work and other upgrades.

Scope:

  • Removal of non-friable asbestos materials (vinyl floor tiles, AC sheets, mastic joints)

  • Removal of asbestos sprayed insulations to structural beams to library

  • Clean up of asbestos contaminated dust between wall cavities

CSIRO – Highett & Belmont Sites

Location: Victoria

Duration: 8 Months

Asbestos removal on 21 buildings on a sold Government site. This included a mix of 19 single and two-storey buildings (offices, laboratories, warehouses and amenities). The former CSIRO Textile and Fibre Technology Laboratory was sold to a development company, who intended to develop the site for residential use.

Scope:

  • Removal of non-friable asbestos materials (vinyl floor tiles, AC sheets, AC Roof, mastic joins)

  • Clean up of asbestos contaminated dust between wall cavities

  • Removal of contaminated soil and remediate the site

Department of Treasury and Finance

Location: Victoria

Duration: 8 Months

Complete decontamination of 84 bathrooms to facilitate upgrades, in 2 buildings for the Department of Treasury and Finance. The work consisted of asbestos removal within highly secured and occupied buildings and working to the program to accommodate the dynamic workplace.

Scope:

  • Establish Decontamination Zones

  • Demolish and Decontaminate bathrooms

  • Minimise disruption to operation of the building

  • Adapt to changes in scheduling

Wynyard Station Upgrade

Location: New South Wales

Duration: 3 Months

Wynyard Station is the third busiest station on the Sydney Rail network. It is an essential link for the City Circle and North Shore lines. Australasian Technical Services was responsible for the High Risk Construction Work in the hazardous material removal works during this large and important public infrastructure and construction project

Scope:

  • Approx. 2,500sqm hazardous material removed

  • Works carried out in a manner that minimised the disruption to daily traffic

  • Removal of both non-friable and friable asbestos materials

  • Removal of lead containing paint and dust

South Coast Bushfire Recovery Clean-up

Location: New South Wales South Coast

Duration: 6 Months

Australasian Technical Services were part of the team of specialised contractors to facilitate the 2019-2020 bushfire recovery efforts along the South Coast of New South Wales. Our team of 40 employees were able to safely remove hazardous material from over 260 properties.

Scope:

  • Abatement works for all hazardous building material on site to enable demolition

  • Mobilised up to 12 teams to systematically and progressively abate sites affected by the bushfires

  • Catalogued and tracked all waste and materials that was taken from these sites

Gold Coast Hospital

Location: Queensland

Duration: 6 Months

Buildings across the 3.5ha site was demolished as part of the redevelopment. As part of a painstaking process of clearing the land, Australasian Technical Services was responsible for the safe removal and disposal of the large quantities of asbestos within its structures throughout the site.

Scope:

  • Removal and disposal of both friable and non-friable asbestos material throughout the site

  • Removal of external roof membrane, vinyl floor tiles

  • Removal of friable asbestos pipe lagging through out the site

Qbuild School Projects

Location: Queensland

Duration: On-Going

Australasian Technical Services has worked together with the Queensland government  to remove hazardous materials from various nominated schools. This relationship has been on-going for over 10 years.

Scope:

  • Abatement works for all nominated hazardous building material on site to enable demolition

  • Vinyl floor tiles and adhesive

  • AC sheets

  • Low-Density Board (Friable material)

  • Work in conjunction with other trades and contractors to facilitate re-instatement works

Western Program Alliance

Location: Victoria

Duration: 18 months

Australasian Technical Services was part of the team of contactors to assist delivery of the Level Crossing Removal Program.

Scope:

  • Removal and disposal of both friable and non-friable asbestos material throughout the level cross sites.

  • Abatement and remediation of material

  • Worked during time critical rail occupation program

Commercial Projects

COMMERCIAL PROJECTS

Melbourne Airport Landside Redevelopment

Location: Victoria

Duration: 8 Months

Melbourne Airport underwent a redevelopment to create a second large scale retail and hospitality re-development in the Terminal.

Scope:

  • Removal of friable asbestos insulated brackets to structural columns and pods to nominated tenancies

  • Decontaminate friable settled dust to ceiling space

  • Works were carried out over multiple shifts to minimise disruption to the airport operations

Pullman Hotel Upgrade

Location: Victoria

Duration: 8 Months

19-Level refurbishment of existing Guest Rooms, Lobby areas, Suites, Executive Lounge and Penthouses at Pullman Melbourne on the Park.

Scope:

  • Soft demolition of over 15 levels of hotel room ensuites containing non-friable asbestos material

  • Conduct HVAC decontamination works for the bathroom exhaust system

  • Removal of asbestos sprayed insulations to brackets over multiple levels.

Stuart Flats
11 Light St, Griffith 

Location: ACT

Duration: 4 Months

The Stuart Flats apartments were one of Canberra’s iconic public housing complexes to be auctioned off to developers in 2018. In 2019 the demolition of the apartments began to make way for newer style residential houses.

Scope:

  • Removal and disposal of both non-friable and friable asbestos containing materials

  • Removal and disposal of both lead paint and lead containing dust

Westpac Building
60 Martin Place, Sydney

Location: New South Wales

Duration: 4 Months

Removal & disposal of Hazardous containing materials from a commercial banking office building, comprising of 28 levels of commercial office and two basement levels of car parking. The building was constructed originally in 1971 and refurbished extensively in 1998.

Scope:

  • Approx. 40,000sqm of  friable asbestos sprayed vermiculite 

  • Custom built air tight enclosures with, negative pressure air & decontamination units

  • Removal of friable asbestos mastic and putty to the external windows across all elevations

  • Removal of asbestos membrane beneath concrete pavers

Monash University  Chancellery Project 

Location: Victoria

Duration: 4 Months

Asbestos removal of existing Chancellery building to clear site for the new building comprising of a single basement level for car parking, ground level public spaces, two levels of office space and a third level to house the University executive

Scope:

  • Soft demolition of internal office building

  • Removal of non-friable asbestos materials (vinyl floor tiles, AC sheets, mastic joins)

  • Removal of asbestos sprayed insulations to structural beams and to the underside of the metal roof

  • Clean up of asbestos contaminated dust between wall cavities

St James Plaza
Redevelopment

Location: Victoria

Duration: 18 Months

Located at the corner of Bourke and William Street, the St James Plaza Redevelopment involves works on the former AMP Plaza and the adjacent St James. Due to the contamination of the building fabric, much of the demolition works were carried out under asbestos conditions.

Scope:

•    Sprayed Asbestos Insulation to structural members
•    Asbestos containing floor screed
•    Asbestos contamination behind precast panels

Barangaroo South

Location: New South Wales

Duration: 24 Months

Supervise the removal and disposal of asbestos contaminated soils on the Barangaroo South site, this involved putting in place the safe procedures and monitoring of all workers involved in the removal of the asbestos contaminated soil.

Scope:

  • Removal of asbestos contaminated soil over a 40,000m2 site

  • Provide supervision and decontamination facilities for over 100 workers

Location: New South Wales

Duration: 20 Months

The University of Sydney is a public research university located in Sydney, Australia. Founded in 1850, it is Australia's first university and is regarded as one of the world's leading universities. The university is known as one of Australia's six sandstone universities

Scope:

  • ​Removal of hazardous building materials to enable the safe demolition of outdated buildings which were replace with new learning hubs for the campus

  • Removal of both non-friable and friable asbestos materials.

  • Removal of lead containing paint and dust

AMP Capital
50 Bridge St, Sydney

Location: New South Wales

Duration: 18 Months

Removal & disposal of asbestos containing materials from a freestanding commercial office complex, consisting of 43 levels including 2 levels of underground parking and a Plaza level comprising of retail shops. The building was constructed in the early 1970s.

Scope:

  • Approx. 20,000sqm of hazardous material removed

  • Removal of both Non- Friable & Friable asbestos containing materials such as AC sheeting, gaskets, electrical backing boards, fire doors, mastic aircon duct joints, black & grey glue, window putty/sealant, asbestos sprayed insulation to cell deck ceiling

  • Custom built air tight enclosures with, negative pressure air & decontamination units

Carlton Connect
Former Royal Womens
Hospital

Location: Victoria

Duration: 12 months

 

The Former Royal Women’s Hospital has been vacant since 2008, consisting of 4 attached buildings that were constructed at different times. The 3AW Tower, Kumm Stephens and Rita Harris building underwent a completely soft strip and hazardous material removal followed by hard demolition of nonstructural elements to leave the building as a base structure for the builder to
occupy

Scope:

  • Custom built air tight enclosures with, negative pressure air & decontamination units on each level

  • Completely remove all fixture and fitting in the multi-level building to enable asbestos removal and remediation

  • Carry out a full asbestos and hazardous materials removal to the 3 buildings enable future demolition and development

INDUSTRIAL PROJECTS

Industrial Project

Energy Australia - Yallourn

Location: Victoria

Duration: 10 days

Remove and dispose of designated insulation and cladding containing asbestos on Unit 2 during the upcoming Unit 2 Integrity Outage 2019.

Scope:

  • Working over multiple shifts during the scheduled outage works

  • Building, maintain and dismantle over 15 friable enclosures over a 7-day outage program

  • Removal of insulation to the boilers and pipes

  • Using a glove bag system to remove over 100m of asbestos insulated pipes

General Motors Holden Plant 10 & 16

Location: Victoria

Duration: 6 Months

ATS was engaged for the hazardous materials removal to plants 10 and 16 at GM Holden’s Port Melbourne site, Victoria. Plant 10 and 16 has a combined area of 72,729m2. Plant 10 is approximately 39,534m2 and Plant 16 is approx. 33,195m2. The plants are steel frame in construction with a combination of saw tooth roof and gable structures, with the roof and wall cladding being predominantly asbestos containing material with some metal sheeting and glass panels.

Scope:

  • Non‐friable asbestos in the form of corrugated cement sheet (roof & walls), electrical backing boards, spark arrestors / arc shields and vinyl floor tiles

  • Friable asbestos was identified in the form of pipe insulation (wrap and cut process), rope seals, HRC fuses and millboard insulation.

  • Cleaning of materials/surfaces will be carried out post removal (or where required for demolition purposes)

Wallerawang Power Station
Unit 8 Cooling Tower

Location: New South Wales

Duration: 4 Months

Over a 4 month period and over 120 staff of site personnel, ATS conducted one of the country’s largest asbestos removal projects with 5,500 tonnes of asbestos corrugated pack material removed from within the Unit 8 Cooling Tower. The complete operating floor and basin level was stringently decontaminated of asbestos and settle dust material.

Upon clearance being issued, the European designed thermal plastic pack material with accompanying reinforced structural beams and associated walkways were installed and commissioned before the allocated project time frame. The ability of ATS to provide the necessary manpower and guarantee the completion of the project before the nominated “shut down” period enabled the client to generate power earlier than expected.

During the outage period, collaborative meetings were held with the client where weekly activities, programming issues and resource levels were discussed.
 

Scope:

  • Approx. 5,500 tonnes of hazardous material removed

  • Remove both Non-Friable and Friable asbestos corrugated pack materials.

  • Install thermal plastic pack materials

General Motors Holden
Plant 11, 12, 14 & Canteen

Location: Victoria

Duration: 10 Months

ATS was engaged for the hazardous materials removal and disposal of the asbestos containing materials as outlined and quantified in the Hazardous Materials Risk Assessment.

Scope:

  • Pre-Clean the carbon dust accumulated internally

  • Removal of asbestos containing sheets to roof and walls 30,000m2

  • Disposal of gaskets to duct and pipe work, valves (demolisher to cut out the gaskets for disposal)

  • Water generated from the asbestos works is to be collected as far as practicable and

  • discharged into onsite sewer/storm water

Angelsea Power Station

Location: Victoria

Duration: 12 Months

The Anglesea Power Station is located approximately 130km Southwest of Melbourne only a short distance from the town of Anglesea in Victoria. It was constructed by Alcoa during the 1960’s and commissioned for operation during 1969, with an operational capacity of 160MW during its 46 year operating life. The operation was officially shut down by Alcoa on August 31, 2015.

Scope:

  • Removal of 1000m3 all positively identified asbestos material as per the audit which include but not limited to insulation to pipes, external cladding, mastic spray (and over spray) over cable trays, inspection hatches, vinyl floor tiles, AC sheet

  • Removal of SMF

  • Transport of asbestos/SMF/rock wool material from work site to on-site landfill

Gladstone Alumina Refinery

Location: Queensland

Duration: 27 Months

 

Queensland Alumina Limited is one of the world’s largest alumina refineries. It is situated at Gladstone, Queensland where it has been operating since 1967. In that time its production capacity has increase from 600,000 tonnes per year to 3.96 million tonnes per year.

 

Scope:

  • Removal of Asbestos materials as part of on-going maintenance and scheduled removal

  • Removal and reinsulating of pipe lagging insulation

Karratha Power Station

Location: Perth

Duration: 12 Months

Removal of the redundant Cape Lambert Power Station for Rio Tinto. This involved the removal of friable asbestos to two boilers. Working in extreme weather much of the works were carried out in cooler overnight temperatures. Further cyclical weather seasonal conditions resulted in a meticulously planned and executed removal program.

Scope:

  • Removal of all asbestos to 2 boilers (4 storeys high)

  • Custom built external air tight enclosures with negative pressure air & decontamination units

  • Worked in continuous shifts to ensure works were completed to program

  • Procured and transported all materials and resources required for from our eastern board offices to site
